About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover Illustration: Unzipping the structure of the IAPP amyloid fibril. Fibrillar deposits of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) are found in the pancreas of nearly all patients with type II diabetes. The atomic resolution structures of two segments derived from IAPP were determined in the amyloid-like state by X-ray crystallography. The structures reveal two features, a tightly packed, dry interface that zips together two protofibrils and a kink in the peptide path. Both features are incorporated into a model of the full length IAPP fibril seen here. (For details, see Wiltzius et al., pp. 1467–1474.)
